Starting a fitness journey can feel overwhelming, especially when you're juggling family, work, and the countless responsibilities that come with midlife. For many, the hardest part is not the workout itself. It's taking that very first step.

For Jessica, that first step happened unexpectedly.

Jessica's Words

"Steve didn’t simply help me lose weight. He helped me change my life."  Expand for full testimonial. (Shared with permission)
I first met Steve Mitchell at Momentum Movement Academy when I enrolled my children in recreational classes. At the same time, Steve was leading an adult functional strength and fitness program. When I discovered that I could work on my own health and fitness while my children participated in their programs, I thought it was an incredible opportunity—and one I couldn’t pass up.
I initially had many questions, and Steve was patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging from the very beginning. I eventually took that first step and joined his Saturday morning functional strength classes.
At the time, I was a woman who was overweight, out of shape, and honestly unsure of what I was capable of physically. Steve immediately made me feel supported rather than judged. He met me where I was and helped me understand that fitness wasn’t about where I started—it was about being willing to start.
Over the following 13 months, I experienced firsthand what makes Steve such an exceptional trainer.
Steve is incredibly observant and attentive. He listens—not just to what you say, but to what you need. He understands that every person comes into a class with different abilities, limitations, goals, and challenges. Yet somehow, he creates a group environment where everyone feels safe, seen and supported.
His workouts are challenging, creative, and constantly evolving. He carefully demonstrates exercises, provides different levels of difficulty, and adapts movements so that participants can safely challenge themselves while continuing to progress. Whether someone is just beginning their fitness journey, recovering from an injury, or ready to push themselves to the next level, Steve knows how to meet them where they are.
What sets Steve apart, however, goes far beyond his knowledge of fitness.
He genuinely cares about the people he trains.
He encourages you when you are discouraged, challenges you when you underestimate yourself, and celebrates your progress along the way. He has an incredible ability to recognize potential in people—even when they don’t yet see it in themselves. His passion for helping others become healthier, stronger, and more confident is evident in every class.
Steve also creates something incredibly valuable in a group fitness environment: a sense of community. You never feel like just another person in the room. He remembers people, pays attention to their progress, answers questions thoughtfully, and personalizes exercises so that each participant can get the most out of the workout.
And the results speak for themselves.
After 13 months of committing to Steve’s guidance and participating in the various classes he leads, I transformed from a slightly overweight, curvy 175 lbs to a fit, strong, firm, and sculpted 137 lbs.
But my transformation goes far beyond the number on the scale.
I have become stronger physically and mentally. I have developed confidence in what my body can do. I have learned to challenge myself rather than doubt myself. Most importantly, I have developed a healthier mindset and a genuine appreciation for exercise and taking care of my health.
Steve didn’t simply help me lose weight. He helped me change my life.
His expertise, dedication, encouragement, and genuine investment in his clients make him an exceptional trainer and mentor. I am incredibly grateful that I walked into that gym, asked my first question, and decided to take that first step.
If you are looking for a trainer who will see you as an individual, challenge you to become your best self, and genuinely care about your success, I cannot recommend Steve Mitchell highly enough.
Steve is not just a fitness trainer. He is someone who inspires people to believe that change is possible—and then gives them the tools, support, and confidence to make it happen.

Taking the First Step

She first came to Momentum Movement Academy in Port Coquitlam to enroll her children in recreational programs. While they were participating in their activities, she discovered there was an opportunity for adults to train as well through fitness classes. The idea of investing in her own health while her children enjoyed their programs seemed like the perfect fit.

But like many people considering exercise after time away from fitness, Jessica had questions.

At the time, she described herself as overweight, out of shape, and unsure of what she was physically capable of achieving. The thought of joining a fitness class can be intimidating when you feel like everyone else is already ahead of you. Many people worry about being judged, falling behind, or not being "fit enough" to start.

Building Strength, Mobility, and Confidence

Fortunately, Jessica discovered something that would shape the next 13 months of her life: a supportive environment where progress mattered more than perfection.

Instead of feeling judged, she felt welcomed. Instead of being expected to perform at someone else's level, she was encouraged to work from her own starting point. Every exercise could be modified, every challenge could be scaled, and every success, no matter how small, was worth celebrating.

This approach allowed Jessica to build confidence while developing the foundations that matter most: consistency, strength, and mobility.

Week after week, she showed up.

Through a combination of functional strength training, mobility work, group classes, and personalised coaching, Jessica steadily developed capabilities she never imagined she would have. The workouts challenged her while remaining accessible. As her fitness improved, the exercises evolved with her. What once felt impossible gradually became achievable.

One of the most important factors in her success wasn't any single workout or exercise program. It was consistency.

Real transformation rarely happens overnight. It comes from making small decisions repeatedly, even on days when motivation is low. Over the course of 13 months, Jessica committed to the process and trusted that her efforts would add up.

And they did.

Physically, the results were remarkable. Jessica transformed from 175 pounds to 137 pounds, developing a stronger, leaner, and more capable body along the way.

But the most meaningful changes could not be measured on a scale.

She became stronger both physically and mentally. She gained confidence in what her body could do. She learned to challenge herself rather than doubt herself. Exercise shifted from something intimidating to something empowering.

Finding a Supportive Fitness Community

Jessica also found something many people underestimate when beginning a fitness journey: community.

Being surrounded by supportive people who share similar goals can make an enormous difference. In a welcoming group environment, members encourage each other's progress, celebrate milestones, and create accountability that helps everyone stay committed. Knowing that people genuinely care about your success makes it easier to keep coming back.

Jessica's story carries an important message

You do not need to be fit before you begin.

You do not need to feel completely confident in your abilities.

You simply need to be willing to take the first step.

It All Starts With a Conversation

Take the first step. Ask the first question. Try the first class.

You never know where that decision might lead.

When Jessica first walked into Momentum Movement Academy, she wasn't looking for a life-changing transformation. She was simply looking for a way to improve her health while her children participated in their activities.

Thirteen months later, she had gained far more than strength, mobility, and confidence. She had discovered what was possible when she committed to the process.

Her journey started with a single conversation and a willingness to begin. Yours can too.
